Speed optimization

Website speed optimization in Northridge

Website speed optimization helps Northridge pages rank better and convert better. But the score most people chase is not the number Google actually uses.

  • Core Web Vitals
  • LCP
  • INP
  • CLS
  • Real-device testing

Website speed is the rare fix that helps rankings and sales at once

Most SEO work pays off in months. Speed is unusual, because the conversion benefit lands the day it ships. Every second of load time costs you visitors who had already decided to contact you, and on a phone over cellular those seconds arrive fast.

Google also uses page experience as a ranking signal. It is not the strongest one, so anybody telling you a faster site alone will take you to the top is overselling it. Between two comparable Northridge businesses, however, website speed optimization is a genuine tiebreaker, and the conversion gain is worth it regardless of what Google does.

  • 2.5s LCP target for a passing grade
  • 28 days of real-user data Google judges on
  • 100 the score that proves nothing
Website speed optimization result card: LCP, CLS and INP marked as passed, and a load-time bar dropping from 4.8 to 1.2 seconds

Search demand

What people search about website speed

Live suggestion data. A lot of it is people trying to understand the vocabulary before they can even diagnose the problem.

The 100/100 screenshot is not how Google measures website speed

PageSpeed Insights gives you two different things, but most people only read one. The big colored score is a lab test, namely one simulated load on simulated hardware, right now. The ranking signal comes from the panel above it: field data, gathered from real Chrome users on real phones over a rolling 28 days. A site can score 98 in the lab and still fail Core Web Vitals in the field, usually because actual visitors are on worse connections and older devices than the simulation. We optimize for the field numbers. The lab score is therefore a diagnostic, not the goal.

Usual suspects

Five reasons a WordPress website needs speed work

These come roughly in the order we find them. None of them is exotic, and most are fixable in a day.

  1. 01

    Enormous images

A 4MB photo straight off a phone gets scaled down in the browser rather than resized on the server, so the visitor still downloads all 4MB. This single issue accounts for more slow local business sites than everything else combined.

  2. 02

A page builder doing the layout

Elementor, Divi and similar add substantial CSS and JavaScript to every page whether used or not. They are convenient, but they have a real cost. Sometimes they are worth keeping, though they are always worth knowing about.

  3. 03

Too many plugins, each loading everywhere

For example, a contact form plugin may load its scripts on every page, including ones with no form. Twenty plugins each adding a little then produce a site that is slow with no single culprit to blame.

  4. 04

    Cheap shared hosting

Server response time is the floor everything else sits on. If the host takes 1.5 seconds to produce the HTML, then no amount of front-end work gets you to a good LCP. Occasionally the honest fix is to move host.

  5. 05

    Third-party scripts

Chat widgets, heatmaps, multiple analytics tags and ad pixels each load from somebody else’s server at a speed you do not control. As a result, they are the most common cause of a failing INP.

The three metrics

Core Web Vitals: the website speed metrics in plain English

Google lists three measurements, each with a published threshold. If you pass all three on field data, the page experience signal is satisfied, and there is no extra credit for going further.

LCP

Largest Contentful Paint

Target: 2.5s or less

How long until the biggest thing on screen — usually your hero image or headline — has actually rendered. This is the one visitors experience as “the site is slow”. It is nearly always caused by an oversized hero image, slow hosting, or render-blocking scripts in the head.

INP

Interaction to Next Paint

Target: 200ms or less

How quickly the page responds when someone taps something. It replaced First Input Delay in 2024 and is stricter, because it measures every interaction rather than just the first. Heavy JavaScript is the usual cause, especially chat widgets and tracking scripts.

CLS

Cumulative Layout Shift

Target: 0.1 or less

How much the page jumps around while loading, which is why you tap the wrong button when an ad or image pushes the layout down. Reserving space for images and embeds before they arrive fixes it, and that work is unglamorous but highly effective.

The work

How our website speed optimization works

01

Measure the field data first

We start with real-user Core Web Vitals from Search Console rather than a one-off lab test. That shows what your actual visitors experience on their actual phones, which is frequently worse than any test you have run yourself.

02

Images resized, compressed, modern formats

Images are served at the dimensions actually displayed, in WebP where supported, and lazy-loaded below the fold but never for the hero image. This is usually the single biggest win available.

03

Scripts audited and deferred

Everything non-essential is deferred or removed. Then we show you what each third-party script costs in milliseconds and let you decide whether that chat widget earns its place.

04

Caching and CDN configured properly

Page caching, browser caching and a CDN are set up to suit your hosting. That means doing it correctly, instead of installing three caching plugins that conflict with each other, which we see often.

05

Layout shift eliminated

Width and height are reserved on every image and embed, and fonts load so text does not reflow when they arrive. This mechanical work reliably moves CLS into the green.

06

Before-and-after, measured honestly

We compare field data over the weeks after the work, rather than a screenshot taken on fast office wifi the afternoon we finished.

Done carefully

What a website speed report should not be

Every business and every platform comes with rules about what may be said and promised. These are the lines we work inside, by default, without being asked.

The number that fools everyone
A 100/100 on an empty cache over office wifi tells you almost nothing about what your customers get on a phone in a parking lot off Nordhoff Street.

It is easy to produce a flattering screenshot: test the homepage on desktop from a fast connection, and exclude the scripts that only load for real visitors. Instead, we report field data over time, because it is the number Google uses and the one your customers actually live with, even when it looks less impressive.

A bright modern workspace with natural light
  • No desktop-only screenshots presented as the result.
  • No stacking caching plugins until something appears to work.
  • No removing functionality you rely on just to win a number.
  • No claiming speed alone will fix rankings, because it is a tiebreaker, not a strategy.

    Strategy & keyword map

We pick the searches worth winning in Northridge and the surrounding Valley, and map each one to a page on your site.

    Build & optimize

Technical fixes, on-page optimization, content, citations and profile work — executed in priority order, highest impact first.

  4. 04

    Report & refine

Every month you get rankings, traffic and inquiries in one report, along with next month’s plan in plain English.

Questions

Website speed optimization questions

What score should I be aiming for?

None, really, because that is the wrong target. Instead, aim to pass all three Core Web Vitals on field data: LCP under 2.5 seconds, INP under 200 milliseconds, CLS under 0.1. A site passing all three with a lab score of 72 is in better shape than one scoring 96 and failing the field data.

Will this improve my rankings?

It helps, modestly. Page experience is a real but relatively light signal, since relevance and links matter more. Where it clearly pays is conversion, because the same traffic produces more inquiries when the site responds immediately.

Can a plugin just do this?

Partly. A good caching plugin handles a meaningful chunk, and if you do nothing else, do that. What plugins cannot fix is a 4MB hero image, a slow host, or a page builder loading code on every page. Those need hands on the site.

How long does it take?

Most of the work takes one to two weeks. The measurement takes longer, though, because field data updates on a 28-day rolling window, so the official before-and-after only becomes clear about a month after the work lands.

My host says the site is fine. Is it?

Server response time is only one part. A host can serve HTML quickly while the page still takes six seconds to become usable because of images and scripts. Both matter, but they are measured separately.

Do I have to drop my page builder?

Not necessarily. We will show you what it costs in load time and let you decide. If the site is otherwise healthy there is often enough headroom to keep it; if you are already failing badly, it becomes the honest conversation.
